I was eating supper with the two older kids when our oldest son said, "I don't like that song." A veggie tales CD was playing in the background and the song which just came on was The Hokey Pokey. I asked, "Why don't you like this song?"

It just doesn't make any sense.

What about it doesn't make sense?

Well, it never really tells you what it's all about.

A few weeks ago one of my friend's from our Sunday school class hosted a guys night out. We ate BBQ, played Texas Hold 'em poker and played Rock Band until 1:00 in the morning. Out of the blue, our oldest son asked at breakfast this morning, "Daddy, you know that Man party you went to?"

I answered, "Yes."

He asked, "Did you play hot potato there?"

This past Monday night our family had an appointment at the hospital in preparation for the impending birth of our third child. We decided to make it a family date night and took the kids to Carino's Italian Grill. They've got this amazing deal on Monday nights where you buy a "family meal" for the price of the single entree.' The family meal feeds at least three adults and is quite enough for me, Becky and our two kids.

The dish we had on Monday night was called Chicken Milano which included four chicken breasts covered with ham, cheese and a generous portion of noodles with Alfredo sauce. Mmmmm, Alfredo sauce! Me and Alf get along real nice!

As we were eating, our daughter said the following about our meal; "This is so good, I can't keep my taste buds off of it!"

When our son was 3 1/2 years old, he was still having trouble pronouncing his "L's." They usually come out as an "R" or a "W." He was trying to sing a song and it came out;

It has been a while since we have placed a new jewel on our blog. We still keep track of our kids funny sayings, I have just not been faithful in posting them to our blog. In this new year I will endeavor to put up a new jewel at least once every two weeks, most likely on Mondays. Here is our first jewel for 2008.

On New Year's eve our six year old daughter walked up to the table where her two grandmothers and one of her cousins were playing a card game. She said, "How about me hoping into this game?" Becky's mother told her that it would be too hard for her, in fact it was even a little hard for grandma to which our daughter replied, "Well, maybe you should just hop out."

We got back from the Witnesses Now For Jesus Convention last night and are taking some of the day off to spend with the kids. I took the dog for a walk this morning and the kids came along. Our son wanted to be like Daddy so he put on a hat too. He decided to get silly so he put the hat on sideways. Our daughter laughed and told him that he looked cute. His reply was,

"That's just the way God made me, thanks!"

We've been getting a lot of rain here in Texas recently and the mosquito's are loving it. Last week we spent some time in the back yard and got bit up pretty bad. When the kids get bug bites, Becky some times puts calamine lotion on them to help take the "sting" out. Once we got back into the house, our son asked for the "mosquito bite feeling better stuff."

One day our family was sitting on our son's bed after getting the kids up from their naps and we were playing around being silly. Our son made this interesting sorting sound so I copied it. We both sounded like pigs, but it was pretty funny. In the past, our daughter has accidentally snorted while she laughs so I asked her if she could snort too. Her reply was, "Mommy doesn't like me to snort because she said it isn't very ladyable."

One of the things our kids always pray for is their Uncle Kimo who is currently serving the Army in his second tour in Iraq. If Mommy or Daddy forgets, the kids will always remind us to pray that Uncle Kimo is safe and comes home soon. Whenever we see soldiers, the kids get excited because they remind them of their uncle. They will run up to them and tell them that their uncle is in Iraq and that they always pray for him. Every solider we have talked to appreciates the thoughtfulness of our kids. This jewel was inspired by Uncle Kimo.

Yesterday our son put a little wooden stool on his head like it was a helmet. He then stated that he was a soldier in the "Army of Uncle Kimo."

2/28/05- While Becky was at the gym, our son was looking out of the window and saw water in the parking lot. He pointed outside and said that the cars went potty. This was is cute because he has been observing that our daughter is potty trained and that he is learning. Since he saw a puddle of water on the ground by a car, his natural conclusion is that the car had an accident.

12/22/05- Becky was talking to our daughter about celebrating Jesus’ birthday on Christmas. Our daughter asked, “Mommy, are we going to make a cake for Jesus? When Becky confirmed that we would, she asked, “But Mommy, who is going to blow out the candles?”

This one is funny also because it takes into consideration how literal children are. Our daughter knows that Jesus is not physically with us so she asked an obvious question that most adults wouldn’t even think about. We had the cake, the candles, so who is going to blow them out?

Time for another Jewel.

6/28/05- Becky opened our son's door at the end of his “room time” to find him sitting in his empty laundry basket. He looked up and said, “The princess will find me floating down the river.”

He was thinking about the Biblical story of Moses being placed in a basket in the Nile River to be found by Pharaoh’s daughter. I thought this one was cute because our son was thinking about the stories we have read him and he is imagining himself as the main character. We, as Christian parents, are also happy that our kids are taking what we teach them seriously.

Last year when our daughter had just turned four (our son was two) the two of them had this little exchange at lunch time. Our son was calling our daughter to come to the table.

Son- Come to the table, come!
Daughter- Don’t tell me what to do!
Son-
What to do!

It may not seem funny just reading it, but picture two little kids trying to establish authority over one another. Our daughter, the older of the two, doesn’t like to be told what to do, especially if it is by her little brother. Our son, on the other hand, rebelliously challenges his older sister and takes her dictate extremely literal.

I thought this was funny because our son completely missed our daughter’s point. She didn’t like being told what to do, but he interpreted her saying not to repeat those exact words. Of course he wasn’t going to grant her wish and, “told her what to do!”

When our daughter was two and a half years old, she had a couple of words that she use to mispronounce. Mosquito bites were Spa-gee-tos bites and Oat meal was called Open meal.

Today at the breakfast table my four year old daughter said, "Daddy, do you want to hear the new words I learned how to sound out?" We have a marker board near the table and the kids are allowed to write, draw, or color on the board. Becky wrote down a couple of new words for our daughter so now she was proud to show me what she learned. "Sure, let's hear them," I replied.

She looked at the first new word and said, "But." She then moved on to the second word and said "Top."

Evidently she didn't say them clearly enough because our 3 1/2 year old son started to copy what he thought the two new words were. He started bouncing in his seat as he rapidly repeated, "But-talk, but-talk, but-talk!"

If you don't get it, repeat those two words out loud really, really fast. Those kids crack me up.

Our family was recently at a lake where we were just sitting in the water and playing with the kids. We were about to leave so I told our son to put his flip-flops back on and he looked at me and said, "No comprendo." He is three and a half.

From the Jewel Box # 1

This post is the first of a new series called From the Jewel Box. This will be a regular feature where we will share with you some of the cute things that our kids say. Parents, you know your kids say some pretty funny things from time to time. Becky and I realized this as soon as our kids started to speak. We found ourselves forgetting some of these sayings and decided to keep tract of them, but we had no idea what to do or how to do it until Becky received a gift from the President of Moldova Bible Seminary.

Becky was given a beautiful hand-carved jewelry box for letting me go and teach at the seminary for five of the last six years (I teach a two week class on World Religions and Cults). We were very thankful for the gift, but really didn't know what to place in the box because Becky really isn't into jewelry. (Praise God she hates chick-flicks too!) Sure, she's got earrings, necklaces, and things like that, but nothing worthy of placing into such a nice box. Then it hit me- How about writing down the cute sayings of our kids and keeping them in the jewel box? Since we treasure these sayings like some people do jewelry, it only made sense to place these little gems into the jewel box. Excellent idea if I say so myself!

We keep the jewel box on a kitchen counter and write down the sayings as we remember. A great portion of these sayings come from conversation at the dinner table. Some of them are cute, some are silly, and others are just plain unbelievable. We'll start with one of the unbelievable ones.

FTJB #1

This one was probably one of the first quotes we recorded. Our daughter was 2 ½ years old and was eating a tortilla chip. She picked up a chip, held it up and said, “Triangle.” Becky and I were completely surprised. We had been teaching her about shapes and we were happy that she is learning to identify her shapes on her own completely uninitiated by us. What happened next blew our minds.

Our daughter took a bite out of the triangular chip. She bit the top off, held it up and looked at it again. She said, “Trapezoid.” Okay, now Becky and I are officially freaked. This example isn’t funny or cute, but is totally off the charts on the WOW factor. We knew our daughter was pretty smart, but we were not expecting this. By the way, Daddy was silently saying to himself, "So that is what a trapezoid looks like."
